All set for VHF

27th Febuary 2010

No kayaking for a while, and if I'm honest, my back feels rubbish so who knows if I'll get out soon.

Phill Hickson from Sheffield canoe club had kindly organised a VHF radio course run in Sheffield, and just 5 mins from our house!
I arrived to find 2 large and daunting looking full DSC VHF radios on tables at opposite sides of the room.
After everyone had arrived, we ran through some basics, and then set to reading through some printed sheets and conversing with the other team, acting out scenarios on the sets.
The biggest challenge really was being able to speak clearly and consisely, and remebering the order and content of information required to pass on succsesfully.
The one thing I brought from this course was that if you think about what is you are wanting to say, then it makes the actuall conversation much easier. The course tutor recomended that we practice when ever possible, and use the radio as often as practical. Not easy when you live in the centre of the country!
I just have to post off my pass card and a photo to the RYA and I will be fully legal for radio use at sea.
Many Thanks again to Phill for organising us all, and to Bill for providing the course.

Of course I now need to look for a radio set, and get out in the kayak!  OUT!
